In fact, we have over-filled our block by at least 20%, and the hotel is completely sold out on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. We have arranged for a block of rooms for attendees at the Quality Inn which is next door to the Marriott (easy walking distance, even closer than the Hilton). Single & double rooms are available at the convention rate of $99 per night; for triple & quad add $10 per person. All rooms in the Quality Inn are "quiet rooms" and we've blocked mostly non-smoking doubles. The number to call for the Quality Inn is 800-231-6215 or 714-750-3131. Please refer to either North American Science Fiction Convention or NASFiC when making a room reservation. Pick Your Floor In order to ensure that members with requirements to be on either party floors or quiet floors are correctly located, people may wish to confirm their locations with the front desk at check-in. The front desk staff will be glad to reassign to the appropriate floor if there have been any problems in room location. Art Show is Full; Docent Tours * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As of 25-Jul-1999, the Conucopia Art Show is full. No more tables or panels can be sold. Anyone wanting space will have to go on a wait list. A list of artists may be found on the website, or send an e-mail message to info@99.nasfic.org that says "send artshow.txt". John Hertz is arranging docent tours. As of 25-Jul-1999, Bjo Trimble, Sue Dawe and Mark Ferrari have agreed to do tours of the Art Show. Stay tuned for more information, or check the Pocket Program and Daily Newsletter at the convention. Gift Shop Items * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As is the tradition with many conventions, Conucopia will be having a store where we will be selling memorabilia of the convention. At this time we are planning on opening the store on Thursday and running it through the convention or until we sell out. Our hours will be from 10-6 Thu-Sat, 10-4 Sunday. We are selling the following items, each with the con name and artwork: * 35mm flash equipped cameras. * Cloisonne' pins - in color * Playing cards - black with gold design * T-shirts. M through XXXL. * Lanyards - black with white design The cameras are permanent, re-usable cameras (not those cheap one shot things). We will not be selling film, but film is available in the hotel's gift shop and elsewhere around town. The lanyards are those shoestring ropes people wear around their necks to hold their badges. They have a rubber ring at the bottom by which the badge can be attached. The design will be a repeating white pattern on black lanyards. The T-shirts will be in FULL colour (with blends and shading) and the Cloisonne' pins in four-colour. The artwork for the lanyards, pins, and cards are all visible on the website. Merchandising would like to thank Alicia Austin for creating art for the T-shirts and pins and to Allison Hershey for creating art for the cameras and playing cards. If you would like us to set aside an order for you, send e-mail to gift.shop@99.nasfic.org and be sure to pick it up by Saturday morning or we'll put it back into the rest of our stock. Filk Music * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Filk. I have heard many definitions -- "music for folk what ain't been born yet." "There was a typo in folk, they typed filk -- and it stuck." "The kind of folk music that folks like us sing." All these are true, and more... If you enjoy music that has a science fiction, fantasy or science theme, then odds are pretty good that you enjoy filk. We are the kind of people who don't fit stereotypes -- although the typically described filker carries and plays a guitar, we have filkers that play an amazing variety of musical instruments, some that sing quite well, and one is no less a filker if one cannot carry a tune, but writes songs for others, or serves as an eager audience. There will be workshops where you can learn more about songwriting and performance. We'll have panels where we'll discuss how we got here, and where filk is going next. If you enjoy the night more than day, stay all night and join the Dawn Patrol -- filk over breakfast in the coffee shop. Of course there will be concerts -- come listen to filk heroes like Roberta Rogow, the Filkharmonics, Kathy Mar, and Joanna Cazden. Sign up for the One Shots to take your own place in the spotlight! Filking will be located in the North Tower, in the "Veranda" room (the former nightclub) near the elevators. I hope to see you there.
